Just started as a courier driver? HMRC & Tax Explained.

If you’ve just started working as a self-employed driver with Amazon, Evri, DPD or any other delivery company, there are a few things HMRC needs you to do.

Here’s a simple guide to help you get started.

Register with HMRC

First, you need to register for Self Assessment with HMRC.

HMRC requires you to register if you earn more than £1,000 in a tax year (6 April 2025 to 5 April 2026).

So if you’ve already earned over £1,000, or expect to before 6 April 2026, it’s time to register. You can do this directly on the HMRC website.

Once you’re registered, HMRC will send you a Unique Taxpayer Reference (UTR) by post.

This is a 10 digit number, sometimes shown as “Tax Reference”.

HMRC normally sends your UTR within 15 working days. It may take longer if you live outside the UK.

When it arrives, share it with your manager/DSP, as they often require it for their records.

If you’re a Taxflex customer, add your UTR to your Taxflex account.

Self Assessment Tax Return

Once you’re registered, you must file a Self Assessment tax return every year.

Self Assessment is the online form you complete to tell HMRC how much you earned, what expenses you had, and how much tax you owe for the year. HMRC uses this information to work out your final tax bill or any refund you may be due.

The tax year runs from 6 April to the following 5 April. For example, the current tax year is 6 April 2025 to 5 April 2026.

Once the tax year ends on 5 April 2026, you can submit your tax return to HMRC. The deadline to file your tax return is 31 January after the tax year ends.

So for the 2025–26 tax year, the filing deadline is 31 January 2027.

VAT

Some courier drivers register for VAT, especially if their income reaches or is close to the £90,000 VAT threshold.

Others choose to register even if they don’t have to, because certain schemes (like the Flat Rate Scheme), can work in their favour and save them money.
